United Way will soon be celebrating this year’s DAY OF ACTION … a day around the world where individuals are invited to join together to volunteer and improve lives.

In our community, United Way is partnering with The City of Clarksville to help beat the “SUMMER SLIDE” – a critical loss of learning during the summer by many low income children due to limited access to age appropriate books. Summer learning loss is one of the most significant causes of achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth. Click here to learn more by the National Summer Learning Association.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:  The Call to Action

In June, United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region and The City of Clarksville will conduct a summer book drive.  These books will be distributed to youth on United Way’s local Day of Action – June 22 – during The City of Clarksville’s “Summer Night Lights” program.  Held at the Kleeman Recreation Center in New Providence, the event begins at 5:30 pm, is open to all ages and includes recreational activities.  A free meal will also be provided by Manna Café Ministries.

You can answer this call to action by DONATING NEW OR GENTLY USED BOOKS.  Books can be donated at the following locations or schedule a pick up for a workplace donation, please call (931) 647-.4291.

    • Crow Recreation Center (211 Richview Road)
    • Kleeman Recreation Center (166 Cunningham Lane)
    • Beachaven Pool (390 Gaylewood Drive)
    • New Providence Pool (166 Cunningham Lane)
    • Swan Lake Pool (2002 Sanders Road)
    • Clarksville Parks + Recreation office (102 Public Square)
    • United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region office (529 N. Second Street)

Volunteers will also be needed to distribute books at the event.  This is project is a fantastic opportunity to engage your workplace and make a direct impact on the lives of our community’s youth.  Please contact Dana Fields (dfields@uwgcr.org or 647-4291) for more information about volunteering.
